New all-electric Canadian train-plane is faster than a jet

Canadian startup TransPod recently unveiled a hybrid between a train and an aircraft that could transform the transportation industry as we know it. The fully-electric FluxJet can travel at speeds of more than 621 miles per hour. Such speeds are even quicker than an average private jet and almost three times that of high-speed trains.

The science behind the train is based on a new field of physics known as “veillance flux.” This technology also features a “contactless power transmission” and aerodynamic and propulsion systems to reduce friction. Essentially, a vacuum tube is set up, in which magnetically levitated pods travel at faster speeds than trains, cars and jets.

Additionally, FluxJet can carry up to 54 passengers and two wheelchairs. It also contains luggage racks for passenger bags, carrying up to 10 tons of cargo at a time. Since the train travels within a vacuum-like tube, it will use a dedicated route already set up by the company. Known as TransPod, this unique tube alleviates congestion that could be experienced on roads and train stations.

Fluxjet comes at a time when the world has been launching bullet high-speed trains in close succession. China, in particular, has been in the headlines for launching bullet-speed trains with the recent one being a train that connects Shangai and Beijing in just 4 hours.

However, even Chinese superspeed trains are still miles behind the FluxJet if speed is to be considered. The only other model that comes close to this speed is the proposed Hyperloop by Virgin. The Hyperloop will travel at speeds of up to 600 miles per hour, but that will not be a reality until 2030.

Besides exemplary speeds, FluxJet also has zero carbon emissions and the creation of up to 140,000 jobs. The fast-speed train will start operating in Canada and is expected to lower transport costs for individuals by 44% compared to a plane ticket.

“All the hard work over the past few years has led to this milestone moment where talk is becoming a reality,” said TransPod’s Cofounder and CEO Sebastien Gendron in a statement. “The technology is proven, and we have the confidence of investors, governments and partners to continue pushing forward to redefine transportation effectively.”
