Sip on these clean, vegan botanicals from Optimist Drinks

Optimist Drinks is offering a new line of clean, vegan and non-alcoholic botanical spirits. Launched out of Los Angeles, the brand keeps sustainable and ethical practices in mind as it provides drinks made without alcohol, sugar or additives. Optimist Drinks pairs its focus on minimizing environmental impact with a physical and mental wellness mission to back it up.

To satisfy the needs of a “mindful drinking” movement, the Optimist Botanicals line uses thoughtfully sourced ingredients. The final product has no sugar, sodium, carbs or calories. So what is it made of? Optimist Botanicals offers three blends: BRIGHT, FRESH and SMOKEY. The creators call them “a liquid love letter to Los Angeles.” Each is a unique flavor reminiscent of L.A.’s various ecosystems.

Botanicals inspired by Los Angeles

BRIGHT is a “sensory journey to salt-sprayed coastlines.” FRESH takes you to verdant canyons, while SMOKEY explores California’s arid desert. These flavors were inspired not only by the environment but by the diverse cultures, landscapes and mindsets of Los Angeles. The creators, husband and wife Tommy Johnstone and Lisa Farr Johnstone, say that despite the popularity of the increasingly crowded NoLo (no and low) alcoholic drinks space, a clean and complex offering was missing.

The Optimist Botanicals line was created with the help of a master distiller in downtown Los Angeles, using 15 unique botanical distillates and a range of extraction methods. The steam, vacuum, and CO2 extraction methods are “clean” and commonly used in perfume making or cannabis extraction. Optimist Drinks uses them to retain the true essence of every botanical for authentic flavor.

Sustainably sourced botanical ingredients

Sustainable farming and supply practices were paramount in sourcing ingredients for the Optimist Botanicals line. With ingredients sourced from all over the world, the company took special care to maintain sustainable and ethical standards.

This careful sourcing results in distinct and high-quality flavor profiles that pair beautifully with other ingredients like fresh fruit and herbs for fun mocktail creations. Combine the flavor profiles to create mocktails like the Professor Plum (recipe here).

BRIGHT – Venice Beach

BRIGHT is inspired by Venice Beach and contains notes of citrus, sherbet, salt and sunshine. Flavors include lemon, jasmine, green mandarin, lavender, turmeric, cornmint, orange, tangerine, fennel, cinnamon and myrrh. If you ever wished you could drink your clean incense or favorite body oils, this is your drink. Venice Beach brings with it the elements of sun, surf, sand and bright outdoor fun. Optimist Drinks describes the taste as “a lemony vodka.”

FRESH – Topanga Canyons in spring

FRESH reflects on the green Topanga Canyons after a late spring rain. The drink includes notes of wild herbs and leaves, pine, juniper berries, cilantro, lime peel, fennel, lovage, basil, angelica root, red thyme, tarragon, jasmine, habanero for a southern California kick, oregano and tangerine. Angelica root, a refreshing herb used for everything from medicine to perfume, lends a unique note to this floral drink. Optimist Drinks likens FRESH to “a botanical gin.”

SMOKEY – High Desert at sunset

If you love the southwest desert at sunset, SMOKEY is the drink for you. This flavor’s tasting notes include warming bonfire, bittersweet and spice. Key botanicals in SMOKEY include Lapsang Souchong, bitter red orange, clove, ginger, sage, turmeric, bergamot, cinnamon leaf, habanero, geranium, valencia orange, and jasmine. Geranium, a type of wild rose, pairs with sweet jasmine flowers to set this scent profile off with a comforting twist. Optimist Drinks describes SMOKEY as similar to “a smooth tequila.”

Why Optimist Drinks?

Optimist Drinks says it has a mission beyond just giving people new choices to experiment with their drinking rituals. The brand wants to help people enhance their social connections and mental and social wellbeing. To this end, Optimist is launching In Progress, a bi-weekly podcast focused on helping people build a practice of optimism.

“The founders of Optimist Drinks are building a company with integrity, purpose and one that is genuinely sustainable,” a press release stated. “There has never been a more crucial time for optimism, and Optimist believes that people deserve the freedom to experiment with their drinking rituals and strengthen their social connections without compromising their physical and mental wellbeing.”

The company will also direct 2% of all sales to help underserved youth access mental wellbeing services. Optimist Drinks’ non-profit launch partner in L.A. is a Safe Place for Youth, a Venice Beach-based organization that empowers young people experiencing homelessness by providing community-driven solutions.

Welcome to the year of the Optimist, says Optimist Botanicals. And honestly, maybe the time for cynicism and skepticism has passed. The world needs all hands on deck, and it can’t hurt to have clean drinks along for the ride. A 16.9-ounce bottle of Optimist is available here for $35.

NASA to test the world's first electric airplane

NASA has shared details of its new all-electric plane that is set to take off to the sky this fall. The plane is designed to run fully on electric batteries , departing from the tradition of fuel-powered planes. If all goes well, this will be the first step toward achieving a cleaner, cheaper, and quieter future for aviation.  Known as the X-57, the plane is lightweight compared to traditional planes . Its weight helps it use less power over the same distance compared to its equal fuel-powered planes. Further, the plane produces less noise as compared to fuel-powered options. According to NASA, the plane is currently being prepared for initial tests, which will be conducted in the desert east of Los Angeles. Biomimicry house hints at a solution to the climate crisis

Houses separate us from nature. At least, that’s the idea we’ve had until now. Architecture that uses biomimicry , permaculture and related practices to keep nature in our building spaces offers a green alternative. B+H Architects Director of Biomimicry Jamie Miller is an advocate of sustainable building practices like biomimicry to help with the climate crisis. Biomimicry creates an architectural option that keeps us connected to nature, without removing the biodiversity from the spaces where we live and work. Now the B+H Architects’ newest residential project shows us how a home can blend right into nature itself. What are stellar earthquakes that make stars move?

What are stellar earthquakes that make stars move? The Gaia mission of the European Space Agency revealed the earthquakes that occur thousands of light years away. Argentine astronomers explain the scope of this space telescope and its discoveries. In 2013 the European Space Agency (ESA), launched a unique space mission: the Gaia space observatory, a spacecraft designed specifically for astrometry: the science that measures the positions, distances and motions of stars with a precision never seen before. Scientists say the mission aims to build the largest and most accurate 3D space catalog ever made of the observable universe, with a total of approximately two billion astronomical objects, mainly stars, but also planets, comets, asteroids and quasars, among other fascinating objects in the vastness of space. This week, ESA released a new update of data collected by Gaia in the last three years, after having observed 10 million stars and space objects, which led to the publication of s...

Bananatex launches a sustainable material revolution at Milan Design Week

A party of three has collaborated to create a multi-purpose material sourced entirely from banana leaves. Swiss bag brand QWSTION, a yarn specialist from Taiwan, and a Taiwanese weaving partner spent four years developing the new material, which is being revealed at the 2019 Milan Design Week. The strong, flexible material, called Banantex, offers a new universal option in the search for sustainable materials . Beginning at the source, the banana leaves come from a natural ecosystem of sustainable forestry in the Philippines. The banana trees grow naturally without the use of pesticides or other chemicals. Plus, they do not require any additional water. The banana plants are a boon to an area previously eroded by palm plantations, bringing back vegetation and a livelihood for local farmers. Iconic Farnsworth House gets a conceptual, sustainable redesign

As a design exercise, California-based architecture firm Jeff Barrett Studio has reimagined Mies van der Rohe’s iconic Farnsworth House for the modern times with a sustainable redesign that includes onsite renewable energy and modular construction. Conceived as a case study for sustainability that would still pay homage to the original architectural style, the proposed design follows the same building footprint while introducing a new materials palette and energy-saving features. Located in Plano, Illinois, about an hour west of Chicago, the Farnsworth House is recognized worldwide as a masterpiece of International Style of architecture. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed and constructed the 1,500-square-foot structure between 1945 and 1951 as a country retreat for his client, Dr. Edith Farnsworth. Built with two slabs, a series of steel columns and expansive floor-to-ceiling glass throughout, the minimalist home was created to usher the natural landscape indoors. The building was ...
